Fans who live in or near Boston might call the Belichick-coached New England Patriots a dynasty, but football enthusiasts elsewhere have another term to describe the Patriots: "Evil Empire." Since Bill Belichick took over the Patriots, the team has won over 200 games, four Super Bowl championships and 14 division titles. That's just greatness. But team's myriad of scandals, controversies, and sticky politics make other fans feel like the Patriots don't respect the game. What do you think? 🏈

The New England Patriots are once again heading to the Super Bowl, to do battle with the Atlanta Falcons. Who will win Super Bowl LI? Fans appear split. But one thing is for sure—it'll continue to stoke the debate over the Patriots and the team's status as an NFL dynasty.

The "Evil Empire" moniker, once an off-hand Twitter joke, became codified when the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette put the Patriots on the cover of their special AFC Championship edition with imagery straight out of "Star Wars."

For haters, enough is enough. The "tuck rule," Spygate, Deflategate, and team owner Robert Kraft and Tom Brady's buddy-buddy relationship with President Donald Trump have made the Patriots look like a shady organization to many fans. The Patriots also routinely skirt the rules on everything from player contracts to free agency. This is a team that operates by its own set of rules.

What a crock. Fans say they aspire to witness greatness, then look a gift horse in the mouth. We are watching history; the Patriots are the greatest NFL team of the modern era. It's a franchise that embodies excellence. And instead of celebrating the incredible leadership skills of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, people find faults or blow things ways out of proportion. Plenty of teams use less-than-desirable tactics to get an edge on opponents. Why shouldn't the Patriots?

Don't be a hater. Celebrate greatness.

You demean greatness. You cheer for its downfall even if it means accepting lesser in your life. Why wouldn’t you, who football is solely entertainment for, want to watch the best teams play the best football as often as possible? Because for you its not about creating greatness. It’s about destroying it before it does more harm than you believe it already has. In other words, you damn great as bad simply to make yourself feel better. And when you do, you embolden others to follow suit, creating a culture in which empires aren’t built—they’re destroyed... And there is nothing more evil than that.

Patriots fans will receive no sympathy! The team has been busted by the NFL and independent investigators for cheating, a charge that both the team and its fans deny, but ESPN was able to verify:

For those of all who have always suspected the Patriots are shadier than the rest. This is a damning smoking gun. The extensive report reveals that the Patriots were up to a lot of nefarious things: Videotaping hand signals and deflating footballs, stealing other team’s playbooks and playlists from locker rooms, disguising videographers as NFL employees to tape opposing teams’ walkthroughs.

And this is a team that doesn't care about sportsmanlike conduct or enjoys the challenge of a worthy opponent. It's an empire, built on a foundation of cheating, and employs a lot of shady tactics to keep its "dynasty" afloat. If there was ever an appropriate term for such an organization, "Evil Empire" is it.

But of course the Patriots Nation isn’t buying any of it. Led by No. 1 sycophant Bill Simmons, Patriots fans are playing the blame game/everybody hates us/conspiracy theory while ignoring the truth. And the rest of America is screaming “cheaters!” And yes, they do prosper. The Patriots have four Super Bowl rings to prove it.

Let's get real. This is football we're talking about, not foreign policy. This blogger says you can divide how people feel about the Patriots into four categories, and one of the most prominent being just a pure, tribalistic hatred for Boston. Why? Because people are animals. The team isn't evil, you're just a hater!

The recent success of the other Boston sports teams like the Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics only fuels the fire. Boston’s 4 major sports teams have a combined 13 championship game/series appearances and a combined 9 championship wins since 2001. That’s an average of one appearance every year since 01. That’s pretty amazing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then the bashers even take direct shots at the fans of these teams and the actual city itself. Do they really think people will take them seriously with this kind of idiotic propaganda? It is childish and just flat out disgusting.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Supporters retaliate and start to say things like, that’s a lot of victory parades through town. You start to lose track of them after a while. It’s certainly lonely at the top. Then bashers accuse the supporters of being cocky and smug. It’s a no win situation.

Fans appear to be split on this issue. Are the Patriots an "Evil Empire" or is just a bunch of haters? You decide.
