Are the ESPYs pointless?

Last night, the red carpet was rolled out to honor some of biggest stars in professional sports at the ESPYs. But is there any reason for the dog and pony show? Athletes from each sport already get their own awards, and having an Oscar-style show is overkill. However, the award show highlights lesser known stories and doubles as a fundraiser for cancer research. What do you think? 🏆

It's been said before, but entertainers want to be athletes, and athletes want to be entertainers. The ESPYs are just another attempt to satisfy the vanity of these athletes in a red carpet show all about them. Don't they already get awards from their respective leagues? Handing out awards in this setting is unnecessary, and only looks like a cash grab for ABC to get advertising dollars.

No one needs to see athletes get all dolled up for a pointless award.

People who hate on the ESPYs love to boil it down to just an award show with athletes. However, the ESPYs are so much more than that. Yes, you'll get the regular awards and the jokes that will split your sides. But there are also the awards that honor some of the most inspirational stories from sports. From Stuart Scott's battle with cancer to Jarrius Robertson daily struggle with life, the ESPYs provide fans with much needed uplifting messages.

Also, a portion of the ticket sales goes to the V Foundation to help fund cancer research. It may be over-the-top sometimes, but the ESPYs are so much more than just an awards show.
