Neo-Nazis just held a swastika burning after a white supremacist rally in Georgia. Critics argued the group should never have been given a permit—American fascists are here for violence, not dialogue. Nazis deserve to be met with force, which is why the Internet has a field day whenever a white supremacists get punched. But others say even fascists have a right to free speech, and stifling them sets a disturbing precedent and doesn't solve the problem. What do you think? 👊

Ten members of antifa were arrested at the Georgia rally, but some argue they deserve medals, not handcuffs.

The New York Times hired, then fired writer Quinn Norton in part because she defended her friendships with actual Nazis. Many say she deserved it: Nazis must be met with force, not friendship.

Genocidal white supremacists don't deserve hearings in the court of public opinion: they deserve ostracism and punches in the face.

But Jesse Singal argues that violence just provides fodder for fascist recruiting, and that there are better ways to combat white supremacy.

When violence does break out, videos of it race through the internet’s white-supremacist underbelly, serving as incredibly valuable PR material...
When the Nazis get punched, it’s “proof” that anti-fascists or liberals or [insert minority group] or whoever else did the punching have it in for “innocent white Americans just trying to protest peacefully.” When the Nazis punch back, it’s proof that their enemies are, to borrow a word from alt-right parlance, “cucks” who are easily bested in the streets. Even when white supremacists lose street fights, they win the long game.

This isn't World War II, and punching these people just helps their cause.

It may feel good, and they may well deserve it, but violence against neo-Nazis only helps sustain a dynamic at which the Nazis will prevail.

Others say that's bullshit. A neo-Nazi killed an innocent protestor in Charlottesville. There's no talking to genocidal maniacs who advocate the mass murder of American minorities. These aren't people you can befriend and reason with. Plus, punching Nazis is arguably an American folk hero tradition. Indiana Jones did it, Captain America did it—even the Blues Brothers made the Illinois Nazis jump off a bridge.

Yes, we are a society of laws, but our laws don't apply to people who seek to destroy the ideals of peaceful democracy.
