Would you rather have a 3-day weekend or a shorter work day?

Some companies allow workers to work a compressed work week, meaning they trade longer work days for a three-day weekend. Fans of the schedule say it's easier to focus with 10 hours in the day and there's the obvious benefit of a three-day weekend. Other places are trying out the six-hour work day. If stressed out workers cost more in productivity and sick days, then workers who work shorter hours will have less stress and cost the company less. Which would you prefer?

Three-day weekends are a win-win situation for employers and employees. Employers get happier and less stressed out workers. Workers get to have a three-day weekend. 

Jay Love, the former chief executive of Indianapolis search engine optimization consultant Slingshot SEO, which has a four-day workweek told Inc. that this employee perk “is an amazing draw in the age of recruiting the best talent to your team” and leads to soaring retention rates.

Three-day weekends open up a world of possibilities. You could go on longer trips. You could get a start on that side hustle. Or you can spend more time with your loved ones. The only trade off is having to work those longer hours. 

“A four-day workweek allows you to continue to contribute on the job while gaining the time to pursue a long-neglected avocation, to help care for the grandchildren or to simply enjoy the other parts of life,” says Cali Williams Yost, chief executive and founder of Flex+Strategy Group in Madison, N.J.

The six-hour work day flips the script and says workers would be more productive if they work less. The idea is workers are unlikely to be working for a straight eight hours. If workers know they'll only be on the clock for six hours, they'll be more efficient with their time. The additional two hours of leisure would reduce stress levels and stress-related issues. 

Some companies outside Sweden are trying out a shorter workday and — surprise, surprise — they’ve found that staff are feeling “refreshed” and enjoying the extra time they have for hobbies, friends and families. Time away from work also allows people an opportunity to think about work tasks in new ways and from different perspectives, so they return to their desks feeling stimulated.

People are working too much and that's not a good thing. A six-hour work day would be a return to sanity.

Burned-out people cost companies and society time and money. They need healthcare, time off work, replacements have to be recruited and trained. Rested, enthusiastic staff members feel positive about their workplaces and can be passionate about their jobs.
