Should the press call Mar-A-Lago the 'Winter White House'?

President Trump often calls his Florida golf club Mar-A-Lago "the Winter White House" and journalists have begun to follow suit. Defenders say Mar-A-Lago's former owner wanted the Palm Beach estate to become a presidential retreat, so the term is accurate. But critics say Trump has no business calling his own property the "Winter White House." We have one White House, and he shouldn't be allowed to rebrand his private, for-profit resort as a presidential residence. What do you think? 🌴 🏌️

The president's critics say he can call his club whatever he likes, but the press should not go along with it. He profits financially from Mar-A-Lago, so it's both inaccurate and a total conflict of interest.

But many news outlets have adopted the new name. If the president stays there during the winter, then it's the winter White House.

The White House is owned by taxpayers and open for public tours. Mar-A-Lago is owned by Donald Trump and is available only to members who can pay $200,000 to join.

Trump's critics also say his trips to his properties are not only a massive conflict of interest but cost American taxpayers millions of dollars. Calling a golf club the "Winter White House" obscures that fact.

But Trump's supporters say this is another example of overreaction from the president's enemies. Who cares??

The original owner, Marjorie Merriweather Post, built the estate in the 1920s. Following Post’s death in 1973, Mar-a-Lago was willed to the U.S. government with the intention that it be used as a winter White House for U.S. presidents and other dignitaries.

Trump purchased the property in 1985 and turned it into a private club, but his defenders say he is fulfilling the owner's original intention to have it be a presidential retreat.

Post donated Mar-A-Lago to the government. If it were government property being used as a presidential retreat, that would be a different story. But now it's Trump's private property, and many say that designation is unethical and inappropriate. He profits from owning the winter White House,  and you're not supposed to make money off the presidency.
