Who's more patriotic: Liberals or conservatives?

Conservatives believe they are more patriotic than liberals, and the polling appears to back them up. But liberals argue patriotism is about more than waving flags and clinging to guns. What could be more patriotic than celebrating a country that welcomes people from all different backgrounds or championing protest as a form of free speech? But conservatives still think liberals are too critical of their country to be true patriots. What do you think? 🇺🇸

Alexandra Lampner argues in The Tab that conservatives have an extremely narrow definition of patriotism. Liberals who want to see others enjoy the benefits of living in America are the true patriots.

Being a liberal and being patriotic are not mutually exclusive. For some, patriotism may look like clinging on to the American flag and all the values it represented in 1776 (back when there were slaves…), but for us liberals, patriotism looks like welcoming people, regardless of their race, religion, or nationality, into the United States, so they too can reap the benefits of being an American.

Furthermore, the values central to the Democratic platform—health care, social welfare, climate change, criminal justice reform—all relate to the American Dream and the idea that everyone should have an equal opportunity to pursue it.

When people ask me why I’m a liberal democrat, this is the answer I give them: trickle down DOES NOT work, climate change is scientifically TRUE, religion should not influence government and politics, and all Americans deserve to function autonomously in a society where they have access to rights like healthcare, a society where Americans are not being ripped off by the wealthy.
What I just described is the new American dream and that’s why I am more patriotic than any tea-party conservative no matter how star spangled awesome they claim to be.

And some liberals believe the far right has conflated patriotism with nationalism.

But as Gallup suggests, the disparity between liberals and conservatives on patriotism is rather significant. Only 36 percent of respondents who identified as liberal said they were "extremely proud" to be American—compared to 61 percent of conservatives.

Rick Lowry argues in National Review that the polling data doesn't necessarily mean liberals hate their country, but that they simply don't hold patriotism to the same regard as conservatives.

To be less patriotic than the average American doesn’t require any elaborate backstory or exotic beliefs — it is, as a matter of fact, a standard characteristic of the typical American liberal. The survey data are clear: There is a patriotism differential between the Right and the Left. Which doesn’t mean that liberals don’t love the country in their own fashion, but their love is not reflected in old-fashioned pride in country.
As a general matter, patriotic sentiment becomes more attenuated the further left you go.

And conservative commentators like Tomi Lahren, who dressed up as the American flag for Halloween, consistently maintain they love their country more than liberals do.
