Stormy Daniels, the adult film star who claims she had an affair with Donald Trump, filed a defamation lawsuit against the president. Daniels says she was threatened with violence to keep quiet about the affair, and that she's suing the president for making false, disparaging accusations against her on Twitter. But critics say her profession undermines her credibility, and argue she's just in this for money and notoriety. Who do you trust more?

In the defamation lawsuit, Stephanie Clifford’s lawyers said the president tweeted a statement accusing her of unlawful behavior: "Ms. Clifford falsely accused an individual of committing a crime against her when no such crime occurred.”

“Mr. Trump knew that his false, disparaging statement would be read by people around the world, as well as widely reported, and that Ms. Clifford would be subjected to threats of violence, economic harm, and reputational damage as a result,” the lawsuit says.

Daniels may be an unlikely heroine, but she has gained many fans for her straightforward and witty takes and her take-no-prisoners lawyer.

Daniels' detractors say her career as a porn star automatically makes her story suspect.

But others say slut-shaming a woman for an entirely legitimate and legal profession is not going to work this time. We're in a different era. Sex workers have rights and deserve respect.

Ms. Clifford has used unshamability and quick-draw ripostes as a force field. When a critic on Twitter told her that “dumb whores go to hell,” she shot back, “Glad I’m a smart one.”

When it comes to her defamation lawsuit, however, Trump allies argue she doesn't have a leg to stand on.
