President Trump's nine-day trip to the Middle East and Europe let him demonstrate his “America first" philosophy on an international stage. Trump himself described the trip as a "home run" and TIME reiterated the trip had "largely gone off without a major misstep." But the president's critics say his refusal to affirm America's commitment to Article 5, the core tenet of the NATO alliance, has seriously damaged our relations with Europe. Was his trip a success or a failure? 🌎

Trump's critics blasted him for holding zero news conferences during the nine-day trip. He never mentioned human rights abuses in Saudi Arabia, and refused to affirm the Paris climate accords, despite the urging of the other six G7 nations. Trump pointedly did not mention whether America remained committed to Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which states that an attack on one is an attack on all.

Many foreign policy experts condemned the trip as a disaster, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel declared Europe can no longer rely on the United States:

“The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out. I've experienced that in the last few days,” she said. “We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands.”

But Trump's supporters applauded his tough tone with European leaders, saying this is what he was elected to do. Many called his speech to the Arab Islamic American Summit calling on the Muslim world to unite in defeating terrorism one of the strongest of his presidency. At the New York PostMichael Goodwin called the trip "a striking success."

One priceless moment came as he stood in the $1.4 billion new NATO building in Brussels and referred to American taxpayers running out of patience with the alliance’s deadbeats. The incident no doubt cheered his supporters at home as much as it rankled the European elites.

At one point Trump pushed aside the Prime Minister of Montenegro. He engaged in a strange, white-knuckled handshake battle with Emmanuel Macron. The Pope did not appear pleased to see him, and gave the president a recent encyclical he had written on climate change. Trump may or may not have given the Italian prime minister the finger. For many, these moments added up to a picture of a widely disliked leader not ready for prime time.
