The Trump administration just lifted the Obama-era ban on importing elephant trophies. Hunters will now be able to bring back the body parts of African elephants shot for sport, although such imports must be approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The ban had been challenged in court by Safari Club International and the lobbying arm of the National Rifle Association. Elephants are a threatened species, and conservationists condemned the decision. Should we ban elephant trophies? 🐘

Trophy hunting is unpopular, but many hunters argue they are actually helping preserve these threatened species.

Proponents of big-game hunting and the current Interior Department leadership say that money from permits to hunt elephants would aid in their conservation by putting more revenue in the system.

Critics say this is just one more example of Trump caving in to wealthy interests, anti-conservationists and the NRA.

Some argue that the profits from trophy hunting are what will preserve these animals' habitat and actually allow them to survive as a species.

And if trophy hunting diminishes those other threats -- by protecting habitat, preventing poaching or acting as a buffer between parks and human populations -- then overall the threatened species could be better off.

The administration tried to lift the ban put in place by President Obama several months ago, but Trump agreed not to in light of the public outcry. Critics accused him of going back on his promise.
