Since he began his campaign, President Trump has been at war with the news media, dubbing outlets who criticize him "fake news."
It would be really nice if the Fake News Media would report the virtually unprecedented Stock Market growth since the election.Need tax cuts— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 11, 2017
Why Isn't the Senate Intel Committee looking into the Fake News Networks in OUR country to see why so much of our news is just made up-FAKE!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 5, 2017
Trump recently amped up his attacks on the media when he suggested networks who report "fake news" should have their licenses challenged.
With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 11, 2017
Trump's tweet was immediately met with criticism. The suggestion that a president is able to shut down media organizations for criticizing him is more than just a little authoritarian.

Some members of the media responded to the president by reminding him the First Amendment of the Constitution includes protections of the free press.
But polling data has shown American's attitudes toward the news media has been on a steady decline. There is a substantial partisan gap between adults when asked if they trust the news media.
And many have supported the president's attacks on the press because they view the mainstream media as leftist propaganda.
