Is torture ever justified?

Gina Haspel, President Trump's new selection for CIA director, has come under fire for her involvement at torture sites during the Bush administration. Trump  himself has called torture effective and morally defensible, and has said he would bring back waterboarding. Civil rights advocates such as the ACLU have vehemently criticized the choice of Haspel, but others agree with Trump and say torture is sometimes justified. What do you think?

In 2002, Haspel was part of the CIA's overseas detention sites in Thailand, where she oversaw brutal interrogations and later destroyed recordings of those interrogations. Advocacy groups like Amnesty International say her nomination shows this administration is completely comfortable with torture and violation of international law, and Haspel's record should disqualify her from leading the CIA.

As a clandestine officer at the Central Intelligence Agency in 2002, Gina Haspel oversaw the torture of two terrorism suspects and later took part in an order to destroy videotapes documenting their brutal interrogations at a secret prison in Thailand.

But Haspel is well-regarded within the CIA and the intelligence community. Many have applauded her selection, including former director of national intelligence James Clapper.

“I am very pleased to learn of Director Pompeo’s selection of Gina Haspel as Deputy Director. It speaks well of him for picking a seasoned veteran of the Agency who is widely and deeply respected by the workforce as well as those outside the Agency. She has the broad-gauged experience from both foreign and domestic assignments to serve as the right-arm for Director Pompeo."

Critics say this appointment just further cements the Trump administration's public indifference to human rights and the rule of law.

Former prisoner of war and torture survivor Sen. John McCain spoke out against Haspel's nomination.

Others applaud the choice of Haspel. Many Americans take a realpolitik attitude towards our treatment of American enemies abroad, and think that while torture is unfortunate it is probably sometimes necessary.
