Do Trump's alleged affairs with Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal even matter?

Pornstar Stormy Daniels is suing President Trump, arguing their non-disclosure agreement is invalid, and she recently released a police sketch of the man who allegedly threatened her. Now Playboy model Karen McDougal is free to speak of her affair with Trump after reaching an agreement with the tabloid that prohibited her from speaking previously. Critics argue Trump's intimidation of Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal is what matters. Others think Trump's sex life just isn't that important. What do you think?

Pornstar Stormy Daniels allegedly had an affair with President Trump and was paid $130,000 in hush money not to speak about their encounter. Some argue this story is relevant because it indicates a possible violation of campaign finance laws in an attempt to silence Daniels.

By failing to report the payment as a campaign expense, the Trump campaign violated multiple federal disclosure laws. And depending on the source of the $130,000 paid to Daniels, the payment may also have been an illegal contribution.

Daniels is now speaking publicly about her encounter with Trump, arguing their non-disclosure agreement is invalid because Trump himself never signed it. Daniels has also alleged that a Trump associate threatened her and her daughter, and has released a police sketch of the man. Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen, who paid Daniels hush money, had his "office, home, hotel room and electronic devices" raided by the FBI.

The agents seized material related to Cohen's work negotiating nondisclosure agreements for women who allegedly had affairs with Trump. One of those women is porn star Stormy Daniels, who was paid $130,000 by Cohen shortly before the 2016 election in exchange for her silence about an alleged dalliance with Trump years earlier.

This is about more than just infidelity, it's about the Trump campaign illegally silencing someone.

But others argue the Stormy Daniels story just isn't important. If the voters elected Trump after the Access Hollywood tape came out, they aren't going to care about Trump having an affair with a pornstar or a playmate.

We’re allowing a former porn star to distract us from the greatest task facing the American people — limiting Donald Trump to a one-term president. Stormy Daniels isn’t going get the job done for us. We’ve got to come at Trump with something much stronger than allegations that he slept with an adult film star a decade before he got to the White House.

Time spent worrying about Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal is time spent not worrying about pressing issues like immigration, health care or war with North Korea. A story about a pornstar may be salacious, but that kind of content is better left to the tabloids.

We should have learned by now that sexual misconduct does not have the firepower to knock a sitting president out of office. Presidents faced accusations of infidelity long before Trump, and after the buzz died down, most Americans moved on. We can be pretty certain that Stormy Daniels, or any other woman who claims to have had an affair with Trump, isn’t going to be the thing that brings him down.
