The value of the WHO comes from the fact that it is an international organization. It is there to advise and assist—it cannot make policy decisions on behalf of national governments. The cold hard fact is that the World Health Organization declared an international emergency on June 30th. It was plainly clear that China was suffering from an unusually dangerous outbreak—videos of bodies piling up, and cities being locked down were readily accessible. President Trump chose to ignore advice from his own people, intelligence reports, and warnings from public health officials. The WHO has no control over President Trump's reckless choices.

President Trump and Republicans have long been skeptical of international organizations. Echoing attacks on organizations like NATO, Trump says the US is wasting money on funding the WHO—it failed to prevent the coronavirus outbreak because of its relationship with China. It is not within the interests of the US to fund a failed and compromised organization.
