The Radio City Rockettes will perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration—but apparently many of the dancers are not happy about it. Some of the Rockettes told their union they do not want to perform, but union officials responded by warning the dancers they are “obligated” to perform at the inauguration, and “any talk of boycotting this event is invalid.” Should the Rockettes put aside politics and perform, or is it wrong to force them to do so? What do you think?

Rockette Phoebe Pearl posted on her Instagram account that "the decision of performing for a man that stands for everything we’re against is appalling." The post has since been deleted

Another dancer anonymously told TheWrap.com that “Forcing dozens of women to go and perform for this man is without a question going to be problematic.” Beyond politics, the optics of dragging America's favorite all-female dance troupe to perform for someone who's openly bragged about sexually assaulting women are not good.

But as a commenter at Jezebel pointed out:

"They are contracted employees. I assume adult women know to read contracts before signing and agreeing to the terms. I won’t insult them by clutching my pearls that they have to adhere to their contracts. I have to work with/for people I don’t like all the time. I will be saving my outrage for more important stuff."

The Rockettes have extremely coveted employment in an incredibly competitive industry. If they don't want to perform for Trump, their union can terminate them and find other dancers who will.

#FreeTheRockettes is trending. Supporters are already emailing their union saying they will boycott Radio City Music Hall if dancers are forced to perform at the inauguration against their will.

But critics are already likening the situation to religious freedom controversies, where people opposed to same-sex marriage are being required by law to provide wedding services for gay couples. The Rockettes are entertainers, and many think they should stick with the high kicks and leave politics out of it.

According to the Madison Square Garden Company, the company that manages the Rockettes, the dancers don’t actually have to perform at the event if they don’t want to. But their union has issued no change to earlier memo it sent the Rockettes saying they had no choice in the matter. According to Broadway World, "Many dancers on social media expressed that those who at one time would 'refuse to work' often had a hard time gaining future employment."
