Against the warnings of epidemiologists and public health officials, some American economic leaders—including President Trump—are alluding to reopening parts of the U.S. economy in the near future. In their words, the "cure" to the coronavirus outbreak shouldn't be worse than the disease itself. Their argument is that the economic depression unleashed by people unable to go to work could cause far more damage than what the disease could cause itself. Some people, like the Lt. Governor of Texas, say we should all "get back to living... And those of us that are 70+, we'll take care of ourselves."

However, these arguments rely on outsiders interpreting epidemiological data without the necessary training and context to understand it. What happens is that they are creating fanciful scenarios which make the outbreak seem better than it really is—and then they use these arguments to justify actions which experts warn will lead in even more people dying. In a scenario where we abandon social distancing, a model created by the Imperial College London estimates roughly 2.2 million Americans will die. Preserving lives is the only way to preserve the economy.

The argument for maintaining social distance practices until the outbreak is under control is simple: the virus cannot infect people if it cannot reach people. Fewer people getting sick means less stress on our medical system which means fewer people die. Fewer people dying means we will be more able to restart the economy like how things were once we get things under control.

Millions of people dying would devastate the economy.
