Should the Democrats filibuster Trump's Supreme Court nominee? | The Tylt
Political observers expected an easy confirmation for President Trump's Supreme Court nominee—but Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer just announced he will vote 'no' on Neil Gorsuch and join Democrats in filibustering his nomination. Republicans have vowed Gorsuch will be confirmed, threatening Democrats with the so-called “nuclear option," allowing Republicans to change the confirmation rules so they can override any opposition with a majority vote. Should the Democrats block Gorsuch? ⚖️
Should the Democrats filibuster Trump's Supreme Court nominee?
Schumer and the Democrats cite numerous reasons for blocking Gorsuch's nomination to the Supreme Court. Gorsuch's track record on environmentalism, women's rights, and corporate malfeasance is disturbing to many progressives. But most of all, this seat was President Obama's to fill, and Democrats say the Republicans stole it in a raw power play.
The way McConnell, et al., treated the Garland nomination was indeed unforgivable....Senate Democrats should use any and all means, including the filibuster, to block confirmation of President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee. They will almost surely fail. But sometimes you have to lose a battle to win a war.
Plenty of people on the right want Mitch McConnell to invoke the nuclear option and confirm Gorsuch immediately.
Even if they don't succeed in blocking Trump's nominee, Democrats will win major points with their constituents for trying.
If I were a Dem senator with presidential ambitions, I cannot conceive of a reason why I wouldn't wage a talking filibuster against Gorsuch.— Ian Millhiser (@imillhiser) March 23, 2017
And for many, it's the principle. Obama's nominee was not given a hearing. The Democrats need to stop playing nice and return the favor.
