The new GOP health care bill would strip federal funding from Planned Parenthood for one year and bar any federal tax credits from being used to help buy private health plans that cover abortions. Conservatives say the AHCA provision will help end abortions in the United States. Critics say defunding Planned Parenthood just prevents poor women from receiving essential medical care, and could actually lead to an increase in abortions. What do you think?

For people who believe that abortion is murder, defunding Planned Parenthood is perhaps the most popular aspect of the GOP-backed American Health Care Act.

But others argue abortion services represent a very small percentage of what Planned Parenthood does and defunding the organization will create a health disaster for millions of low-income Americans.

In addition, there is a specific law on the books that assures that no federal funds go to pay for abortions:

Since 1976, the Hyde Amendment has blocked federal Medicaid funding for abortion services (since 1994, there have been three extremely narrow exceptions: when continuing the pregnancy will endanger the woman’s life, or when the pregnancy results from rape or incest).

There is a lot of pressure on moderate Republican senators like Maine's Susan Collins to vote no on AHCA specifically because of the defunding provision.

But the measure is enormously popular with pro-life voters. Regardless of how federal dollars are spent, they see Planned Parenthood as promoting abortion.

And opponents of Planned Parenthood were furious that the organization's political wing donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Democrat John Ossoff's failed campaign in Georgia. They say if Planned Parenthood has that kind of money to spend on politics, they don't need funding from taxpayers.
