Should Stephen Miller resign?

Lawmakers are calling on Trump immigration policy adviser Stephen Miller to resign over his white nationalist views. Former Breitbart editor Katie McHugh leaked her emails with Miller, which show Miller sending white supremacist talking points and articles from extremist websites. Miller shows exactly what he believes in his own words. The Trump administration defended Miller, citing his Jewish heritage and saying he “loves this country and hates bigotry in all forms.”

Government leaders are calling on Miller to resign. There's no way a white nationalist should be tolerated in the White House, let alone be put in charge of immigration policy. One of the clearest examples is that Miller recommended "Camp of the Saints," a racist novel celebrated by white nationalists, to Breitbart in one of his emails.

Here's how the SPLC characterizes "Camp of the Saints."

Miller recommended in a Sept. 6, 2015, email that Breitbart write about “The Camp of the Saints,” a racist French novel by Jean Raspail. Notably, “The Camp of the Saints” is popular among white nationalists and neo-Nazis because of the degree to which it fictionalizes the “white genocide” or “great replacement” myth into a violent and sexualized story about refugees.
The novel’s apocalyptic plot centers on a flotilla of Indian people who invade France, led by a nonwhite Indian-born antagonist referred to as the “turd eater” – a character who literally eats human feces. In one section, a white woman is raped to death by brown-skinned refugees. In another, a nationalist character shoots and kills a pro-refugee leftist over his support of race mixing. The white nationalist Social Contract Press plucked the 1973 book from relative obscurity and distributed it in the United States.

The SPLC documents 10 clear cases where Miller reveals himself as a white nationalist. Take a read for yourself.

Some people who defend Miller say he cannot be a white supremacist because he is Jewish. But Miller was actively reading and sending articles from a white supremacist website to an editor at Breitbart. His actions speak far louder than his identity.

Miller defended himself against the accusations of being a white supremacist in an interview on Fox News. He accused his critics of being antisemitic for criticizing him. Take a listen for yourself:

“Not only am I not anything of the sort, but I find the accusation to be profoundly offensive and completely outrageous. It is an attempt on the part of the Democratic Party to attack and demonize a Jewish staffer. And make no mistake, there is a deep vein of anti-Semitism that is running through today’s Democratic Party.

“There is nothing wrong with my emails. There is nothing wrong with anything I said. Unless being proud to be an American and standing up for Americans is a crime,”

Despite the emails, the White House is standing by Miller. The Washington Post asked Republican strategist and former Marco Rubio aide Alex Conant to explain why:

Much of the anti-immigration views that Miller promoted in his private correspondence with a reporter at the far-right Breitbart News during Trump’s presidential campaign in 2015 and 2016 reflected views that Miller, who had served as an aide to Jeff Sessions (R) when Sessions was a U.S. senator from Alabama, had promoted for years in meetings with lawmakers, Conant added.
“The more controversial positions such as why immigrants are bad for American culture — that’s what he believes, and a lot of that is what the president believes, too,” Conant said. “Those are arguments he made in rooms with other Senate staffers. It’s not a surprise at all.”
