President Donald J. Trump has faced widespread criticism for assassinating Iranian military leader Qassem Soleimani in an airstrike. Trump's critics, on the left and the right, say his actions are actually making America less safe—he's not prepared for the repercussions of his actions.

With impeachment already underway, politicians should take advantage of the moment and remove him from office. He is the kind of person the Founding Fathers warned us about.

His supporters say Trump is taking bold action to protect American citizens. Americans voted for Trump because he said he would work differently than previous presidents—now he's delivering on that promise.

Trump's critics say he has bad instincts, and worry that in a crisis, Trump will make poor decisions. That's already happened with Soleimani. In the aftermath of the assassination, news organizations reported on how the decision came together.

It turns out the Pentagon offered the assassination as an extreme option in order to make the other moderate options more palatable. Trump unexpectedly selected the most extreme option possible, stunning his advisers and military officials. Going by nothing more than gut instinct, Trump destabilized an entire region and possibly committed the US to another unwinnable war.

Here's how the New York Times says the decision was made:

They didn’t think he would take it. In the wars waged since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Pentagon officials have often offered improbable options to presidents to make other possibilities appear more palatable.
After initially rejecting the Suleimani option on Dec. 28 and authorizing airstrikes on an Iranian-backed Shiite militia group instead, a few days later Mr. Trump watched, fuming, as television reports showed Iranian-backed attacks on the American Embassy in Baghdad, according to Defense Department and administration officials.
By late Thursday, the president had gone for the extreme option. Top Pentagon officials were stunned.

Trump has shown that he is unfit for office. He's putting American lives at risk.

The impeachment process is a clear opportunity to safeguard America from Trump's actions. However, it's unlikely Republicans will break from Trump to vote him out.

In fact, many Republican officials are standing by Trump. Iran hawks have been pushing for Trump to take action like this since day one. The argument for confronting Iran boils down to the fact that despite all the diplomatic wins of the Obama administration, Iran was still funding terrorists and destabilizing the region. It has funded and armed groups in Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria.

In the hawks' opinions, it is necessary to confront Iran to stop its foreign adventures. Trump did not respond to Iran's previous provocations and in fact, called off strikes against Iran in the past. Americans voted for President Trump because he promised he would be different than our previous leaders.

Trump's supporters see Soleimani's killing as a positive thing. For years, Soleimani has been menacing the region. He advised Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in his effort to maintain control — leading to mass starvation, indiscriminate shelling, and other cruel tactics. Soleimani was definitively a bad guy and taking him out was a good thing.

The White House argues Soleimani posed a serious and imminent threat to American citizens. Trump acted to protect American lives.
