Should President Obama speak out more often?

President Barack Obama broke with tradition to speak out against President Trump and his administration's fitful response to the coronavirus pandemic. During a speech to graduating high schoolers, Obama said in a thinly-veiled dig at the White House that "doing what feels good, what's convenient, what's easy—that's how little kids think. Unfortunately, a lot of so-called grown-ups, including some with fancy titles and important jobs, still think that way—which is why things are so screwed up." Despite having been in office for more than three years now, President Trump called Obama "grossly incompetent," shifting the blame and responsibility for the poor pandemic response on Obama's administration.

Obama's supporters believe that Obama should break with tradition and speak out. This is an unprecedented time and the United States needs leadership. Frankly. President Trump has largely been absent as a leader and the nation is suffering for it.

However, Trump's supporters have reacted extremely negatively against Obama's speech. Without a sense of irony, they attack Obama's actions as something beneath the office of the President—despite years of reckless and odious behavior from President Trump.
