Should Mike Pence run for president in 2020?
Ryan Lizza says disgraced former press communications director Anthony Scaramucci "offered some cryptic thoughts about Vice-President Mike Pence."
“Why do you think Nick’s there, bro?” Scaramucci asked me, referring to Nick Ayers, Pence’s recently installed chief of staff. “Are you stupid?” He continued, “Why is Nick there? Nick’s there to protect the Vice-President because the Vice-President can’t believe what the fuck is going on."
Pence's PAC is definitely out of the ordinary. And the New York Times report indicated Republicans smell blood in the water and that many of them, including Pence, are gaming out whether Trump could be replaced by another Republican in 2020.
In interviews with more than 75 Republicans at every level of the party, elected officials, donors and strategists expressed widespread uncertainty about whether Mr. Trump would be on the ballot in 2020 and little doubt that others in the party are engaged in barely veiled contingency planning. “They see weakness in this president,” said Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona. “Look, it’s not a nice business we’re in.”
No Vice President in modern history had their own PAC less than 6 month into the President's first term. Hmmmm
But Frank Bruni says Pence is screwed no matter what he does. He's irrevocably tied to this president and this presidency. If the Trump ship sinks, he will go down with it.
On some level, he must realize that he’s in a no-win situation. Without Trump he’s nothing. With Trump he’s on a runaway train that he can’t steer or brake. If it doesn’t crash, Trump can scream down the tracks straight through 2020. If it does, Pence will be one of the casualties.
