Should insurance companies be required to cover vasectomies?

While the contraception mandate of the Affordable Care Act guarantees birth control coverage, many find it strange insurers are not required to cover vasectomies. Critics say vasectomies should be covered just like birth control pills or tubal ligationsand that birth control isn't just women's responsibility. But many in the insurance industry object, saying mandating more services will raise costs. We can't expect every service for free. What do you think? ✂️

"There are wide swaths of men for whom vasectomy is inaccessible," says Dr. Brian T. Nguyen, who points out reproductive health care policy has long focused only on women.

Excluding methods used by men from the contraceptive coverage guarantee also sends a message reinforcing the all-too-common cultural attitude that contraception is solely a woman’s responsibility.

While some states are moving to mandate vasectomy coverage, insurance companies are often against it.

“Our objection isn’t to including vasectomy, but mandating that it be free of charge,” said Leslie Moran, senior vice president of the New York Health Plan Association. “At a time when we are looking to ensure affordability, we shouldn’t be looking to add new requirements and new costs that would be borne by all premium payers.”

When you consider that a vasectomy is far less expensive and less invasive than tubal ligations, it's weird that they are not covered. The Guttmacher Institute argues leaving coverage out of the ACA was a mistake:

Vasectomy and condoms were left out of the Affordable Care Act’s guarantee of contraceptive coverage without out-of-pocket costs, despite their proven health benefits and long history of inclusion in other public and private programs.

Others see the outcry as entitled whining. Is there anything that insurance shouldn't be forced to cover?

Some people still object to the idea that birth control is covered under health insurance at all.
