Should FBI Director James Comey lose his job?
The Hatch Act is a law prohibiting government employees from using taxpayer-funded offices to play politics. Senior Justice Department officials apparently tried to dissuade Mr. Comey from sending the initial letter, arguing it would violate department guidelines against discussing current criminal investigations or interfering in elections. The FBI's reputation as a politically neutral institution has been seriously damaged.
Reports that Comey gave in to pressure from a strongly anti-Clinton faction within the FBI, or that he feared the wrath of Republican legislators if he withheld the discovery of new emails until after the election, don't say much for his leadership. An editorial in the Washington Post slammed the FBI director of giving in to "a lynch mob mentality" and said that a "more courageous man would have kept silent and taken the heat. Comey, however, succumbed to the pressure."
Comey's defenders argue he had few good options in this situation. Whatever choice he made would enrage one side of the political spectrum. And if rogue FBI agents were going to leak the new discovery, better that he announce it.
