Californians are voting on a proposition that would force all adult film actors to use a condom while filming on set. Many officials believe Prop 60 is a bad law as written, and shouldn't be passed, but it does raise interesting points. Adult film actors are at a higher risk of infection for STDs, and using condoms on set would lower those rates. According to a 2012 study published in the Sexually Transmitted Diseases journal, 28 percent of adult film actors tested positive for chlamydia or gonorrhea.
Adult film actors should not have to work under conditions that put their health at risk. Profits are not worth the bodily harm.
However, adult film actors argue that the regulations are already working—Cal/OSHA has not documented any transmission of HIV/AIDS in 12 years. It's a sign the current regulations are working.
There may be other benefits to adult film actors wearing condoms.
There are better ways to ensure the safety of adult film workers than making condoms mandatory.
But for many it makes a lot of sense for adult film actors to wear condoms. It's demonstrably safer.
At the end of the day, it should be the actor's choice to put themselves in however much risk they want.
