Are you more worried about reopening too quickly or too slowly?

Public health experts across the board say reopening society before the spread of COVID-19 is properly under control will result in a devastating death toll. There is still too much unknown about how the virus actually works—but it's clear that there is the potential for disaster under the right conditions. However, there is a growing minority of Americans who are aggressively agitating for states to reopen. Armed groups have marched on state legislatures and broken into capitol buildings while wearing military-style body armor and carrying rifles. They say the economic impacts of an extended shut down would be worse than the impact of a coronavirus outbreak—however, this ignores everything we've learned about the uniquely infectious and deadly nature of this disease.

The stay-at-home orders won't last forever. They are an essential part of preventing people from dying of the disease. Lifting them too early will expose more people to the virus, allowing it to spread, and for more people to die. No one wants to stay indoors forever, but reopening too soon would mean that all sacrifices we've made over the past few months have been for nothing.

Despite the warnings from public health experts and misgivings from the general public, Republican leaders are pushing for the country to reopen. They say the economic devastation from the lockdowns will be worse than the impact of the pandemic itself. However, even in countries that have the disease under control, consumer demand has flattened. Despite the contrary evidence, conservatives believe the US should reopen.
