Though President Trump has staunchly defended his administration's response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, his critics blame his slow response and mismanagement for turning the crisis into an even worse disaster. After President Bush's tepid response to the 2005 hurricane that devastated New Orleans, "Katrina" has become political shorthand for horrifically mismanaged natural disasters. Trump supporters say he's doing all he can. Will Hurricane Maria go down in history as Trump's Katrina?

At Fast Company, Sarah Kendzior said the only difference between Bush/Katrina and Trump/Maria is that we had higher standards for President Bush. No one expects Trump to handle a crisis like this competently or empathetically.

Few expected that Trump would grant Puerto Rico, a territory of mostly non-white, Spanish-speaking U.S. citizens, the same respect as a U.S. state.
Trump’s heartlessness still has the capacity to shock, but it does not surprise. Hurricane Maria is not Trump’s Katrina: It’s just Trump being Trump, the presidency its own existential threat.

Others point to Puerto Rican officials who have congratulated the president on his response to the crisis.

But weeks after the hurricane made landfall, millions of Puerto Ricans still don't have electricity or clean drinking water.

Trump pointed out that the governor of Puerto Rico has commended his efforts, and stated that the government has done their job, it's now up to the people of Puerto Rico to do theirs. He and his supporters say the island's infrastructure was in terrible shape before the hurricane hit which was not their fault.

"We have delivered tremendous amounts of water, and then what you have to do is you have to have distribution of the water by the people on the island," Trump said at a news conference on Monday from the White House.

Some conservatives criticized the president's response, but say the left is politicizing the problem in order to deliberately turn Maria into "Trump's Katrina."

Others point out that while we argue about Tweets, the situation continues to devolve. Puerto Ricans are dying.

The American public has not thus far approved the president's handling of the disaster.

The president Tweeted a video in his defense.

The president's defenders want to know: what exactly was he supposed to do? Maria is a massive disaster on an island already plagued with infrastructure problems. Trump doesn't have the power to stop hurricanes.

But a timeline of the disaster response published by The Washington Post specifically blamed the administration's slow response for worsening the crisis.

The administration still fumbled at key moments after stepping up its response. A week after landfall, Trump still had not waived the Jones Act, a law that barred foreign flagged vessels from delivering aid to Puerto Rico. Such a waiver had been granted for previous hurricanes this year.
