President Trump has come under fire for recent comments he made suggesting former President Obama didn't call Gold Star families:
“The traditional way, if you look at President Obama and other presidents―most of them didn’t make calls. A lot of them didn’t make calls. I like to call when it’s appropriate, when I think I’m able to do it. They have made the ultimate sacrifice, so generally I would say that I like to call. I’m going to be calling them. I want a little time to pass.”
Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough scolded the president on Morning Joe, demanding he behave more like a role model, especially when it comes to fallen soldiers and their families.
Since President Trump was elected, Buzzfeed News reported an increase in bullying across the country―with 50 incidents of children specifically evoking Trump to harass other students.
Donald Trump’s campaign and election have added an alarming twist to school bullying, with white students using the president's words and slogans to bully Latino, Middle Eastern, black, Asian, and Jewish classmates. In the first comprehensive review of post-election bullying, BuzzFeed News has confirmed more than 50 incidents, across 26 states, in which a K-12 student invoked Trump’s name or message in an apparent effort to harass a classmate during the past school year.
But others argue it is not the job of a president to be a role model, and would rather have a president who gets things done than one who worries about how children perceive him.
Many argue results and policy are far more important than a president's character, and people should stop obsessing over whether or not President Trump is a good role model.
These two things are not the same. Good people can do terrible things, and bad people can produce good outcomes. The character of a person is just not as important as many hold it to be. Sometimes, their character is something to be ignored and not taken as a measure of anything serious. The little kids on my street know this. I’m surprised that nobody else does.
But many still believe the president sets an example for children whether he likes it or not, and Trump should be a more responsible role model.
Our President is a horrendous example for our children. He is the opposite of everything I want to teach them and everything they should not strive to be. Trump is not a role model for my kids and not an example for them to follow.
There has never before been a President who has no interest in being Presidential, no interest in uniting the country, no interest in appealing to what is good or positive in people, no interest in being a role model to America's children. Trump truly is unfit for office.
