Do presidents need to be role models?

President Trump has been criticized by both Democrats and Republicans for his unpresidential behavior―most recently for calling Haiti, El Salvador, and African nations "shithole countries." Many are demanding the president put more effort into being a role model with the eyes of the world on the Oval Office. But Sarah Huckabee Sanders claimed only God is the "perfect role model," and what Trump achieves is more important than how he behaves. Do presidents need to be role models? 🤔

President Trump has come under fire for recent comments he made about immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries—using language rarely heard or seen on network television:

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump said, according to these people, referring to African countries and Haiti. He then suggested that the United States should instead bring more people from countries like Norway, whose prime minister he met Wednesday.

Journalists were struggling to figure out how to report the news, including at big papers that rarely tend to print profanity.

Parents were immediately appalled to hear that kind of language from someone who is supposed to be a leader for U.S. citizens everywhere.

But others argue it is not the job of a president to be a role model, and would rather have a president who gets things done than one who worries about how children perceive him.

Many argue results and policy are far more important than a president's character, and people should stop obsessing over whether or not President Trump is a good role model.

These two things are not the same. Good people can do terrible things, and bad people can produce good outcomes. The character of a person is just not as important as many hold it to be. Sometimes, their character is something to be ignored and not taken as a measure of anything serious. The little kids on my street know this. I’m surprised that nobody else does.
