Should taxpayer dollars fund Planned Parenthood?
Planned Parenthood has long been the target of anti-abortion activists, with Project Veritas President James O'Keefe tweeting out a video he claims is evidence of the organization accepting money to "abort specifically black babies."
In 2017, Planned Parenthood was forced to close 32 facilities.
The number of Planned Parenthood facilities has dropped significantly over the last 10 years. This year alone, the abortion giant closed 32 facilities. Let's see every one of them shutter and every child protected. #DefundPPhttps://t.co/IlotYVmH1h
Planned Parenthood provides women—and particularly poor women—essential healthcare needs and tools for family planning such as STD testing, birth control, and sex education. Abortion only makes up 3 percent of the organization's services.
Not to mention the Hyde Amendment already blocks federal dollars from funding abortion services.
Since 1976, the Hyde Amendment has blocked federal Medicaid funding for abortion services (since 1994, there have been three extremely narrow exceptions: when continuing the pregnancy will endanger the woman’s life, or when the pregnancy results from rape or incest). This means Medicaid cannot cover abortion even when a woman’s health is at risk and her doctor recommends she get an abortion.
