Weirdest Mitt Romney move: Pierre Delecto or how he blows out birthday candles?

Senator Mitt Romney has built a reputation over his decades-long political career as a buttoned-up public official. That changed after two separate, yet equally odd, events. In March, while celebrating his birthday, Romney revealed he blew out candles by taking each one out of the cake, then blowing them out. Months later in October, Romney revealed he had a secret Twitter account, which he used to follow politics. The name he chose—Pierre Delecto. Which is the more odd move?

The discovery of Romney's private Twitter was made by Slate reporter Ashley Feinberg. Feinberg used a very long list of distinguishing characteristics which the Senator shared with the Atlantic—he follows 668 people exactly, he doesn't follow the president, he does follow Conan O'Brien. Feinberg quickly found Romney's account—@qaws9876—also known as Pierre Delecto. While the account itself is full of activity that would be expect from Romney—liking lots of pro-Romney tweets, responding to encouragement, following his expansive family—the name is still baffling.

There is one remaining mystery, however: the username. The handle @qaws9876 doesn’t hold any obvious significance to Romney, although considering the four letters are all directly adjacent to one another on a standard keyboard, and the numbers are simply run backward, it seems entirely possible that it was an attempt at random placeholder text. The name Pierre Delecto, however, is harder to explain. “Pierre” certainly does seem like a name a Mitt Romney-type looking for an alias might choose, though the “Delecto” is less clear.

Many people have secret Twitter accounts. Many of those people probably have named their accounts something somewhat embarrassing. However, has anyone in the world ever blown candles out the way Mitt Romney blows birthday candles out? In a video posted to his (public) Twitter account after his birthday, Romney is shown delicately taking each and every tiny lit candle out of his birthday cake and blowing them out one at a time. While, yes, this method would clearly be more sanitary. It is, however, deeply strange to watch.
