From Trump responding to news of the appointment of a special counsel by slumping in his chair and shouting "I'm f***ed" to Press Secretary Sarah Sanders admitting she willfully lied to the press, the Mueller Report contained more than a few bombshells But the piece many people have latched onto is about Donald Trump, Jr. The report seems to imply Don Jr. was not charged with campaign finance violations because he was too dumb to know that what he was doing could be criminal. Did Mueller really go there?

Mueller and his team discussed their decision not to press charges against members of the Trump campaign who participated in the June 9th Trump Tower meeting. The Trump team had been promised dirt on Hillary Clinton, procured and provided by Russian nationals. In an email, Don Jr. replied, "If it's what you say...I love it." As Vanity Fair reports, Mueller and his team felt the meeting came awfully close to violating election laws. However, the team declined to press charges after determining Don Jr. and others probably had no earthly idea what they were doing was illegal.

This series of events [surrounding the June 9 meeting] could implicate the federal election-law ban on contributions and donations by foreign nationals...Specifically, Goldstone passed along an offer purportedly from a Russian government official to provide “official documents and information” to the Trump campaign for the purposes of influencing the presidential election. 
[T]he Office determined that the government would not be likely to obtain and sustain a conviction for two other reasons: first, the Office did not obtain admissible evidence likely to meet the government’s burden to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that these individuals acted “willfully,” i.e. with general knowledge of the illegality of their conduct...

Don Jr., for his part, didn't see anything wrong about Mueller's conclusion, making a huge stink on Twitter about how he and his family had been entirely vindicated.
