The National Rifle Association (NRA) is banning guns from the premises when Vice President Mike Pence speaks at its convention. Many are calling the NRA hypocritical; if the organization really believes more guns keep us safe, why ban guns at the convention? But others point out it's the Secret Service, not the NRA, that is insisting guns be barred while Pence is speaking, and the NRA stands by its assertion that "a good guy with a gun" is the key to public safety. What do you think? 🔫

Parkland shooting survivors were quick to call out the NRA's hypocrisy after it announced guns would not be allowed on the premises when Vice President Mike Pence speaks at its convention. The NRA has long touted the "good guy with a gun" theory as a solution to reduce violence. But clearly, that line of thinking doesn't apply when it comes to the safety of the Vice President.

Wait wait wait wait wait wait you’re telling me to make the VP safe there aren’t any weapons around but when it comes to children they want guns everywhere? Can someone explain this to me? Because it sounds like the NRA wants to protect people who help them sell guns, not kids.
The reality is, life is not an action movie. If one "bad guy with a gun" attempted to harm the vice president in a room full of people with guns, it would be almost impossible to identify the shooter. More guns make us less safe, and even the NRA is tacitly admitting that.

But the NRA asserts it's the Secret Service that is forcing the organization to prohibit guns from the convention. As Emily Rupertus argues on the NRA Blog, there are many cases in which a "good guy with a gun" has prevented a dangerous situation from getting worse.

There's a reason we call the police when we feel threatenedthey have guns. Why not just cut out the middleman and encourage more citizens to prevent bad things from happening?

A dangerous, life-threatening situation can arise in a matter of seconds. Thankfully, our Founding Fathers gave us the right to defend ourselves, our families, and our communities. As law abiding citizens, we have the tools, resources, training, and bravery to stop evil in its tracks. And when the wolf is at the door, the good guys with guns know that we are our first line of defense.
