President Trump ordered a military parade take place in Washington on Veterans Day. He loves a parade, and apparently wanted one for his inauguration. But many are uncomfortable with the idea. Military parades are often associated with authoritarian dictators, not Western democracies, and spending millions on a parade seems wasteful. Others argue we should celebrate American military might by putting it on display. What do you think? ๐ŸŽ–๏ธ

President Trump has been talking about having a military parade since witnessing the Bastille Day festivities in Paris last year, and it seems he will finally get his wish. The Pentagon says the parade requested by President Trump will officially take place in Washington D.C. on Veterans Day.

The Pentagon says a military parade requested by President Trump will take place in Washington on Veterans Day to honor those who have served in the military from the Revolutionary War through today... [and] commemorate the end of World War I.

According to NPR, the parade will cost anywhere between $3 million and $50 million.

It will cost millions to ship tanks and other military hardware to Washington for such a display. It's both wasteful and creepy.

The U.S. traditionally has not embraced showy displays of raw military power, such as North Koreaโ€™s parading of ballistic missiles as a claim of international prestige and influence... U.S. military members commonly participate in parades on the Fourth of July and other holidays to mark appreciation and remembrance of military veterans, typically do not include gaudy displays of military hardware.

Many feel the money could be better spent to take care of our veterans.

Others say military parades are for authoritarian regimes. Why would we imitate the habits of Hitler, Stalin and modern-day North Korea?

But Trump fans are thrilled. They see it as a way to honor the men and women who serve in our military.

โ€œBeing a great president has to do with a lot of things, but one of them is being a great cheerleader for the country,โ€ Trump said in a January interview with The Washington Post. โ€œAnd weโ€™re going to show the people as we build up our military, weโ€™re going to display our military.โ€

It's not a brand-new idea: Roosevelt, Eisenhower, and Kennedy all had large, modern military contingents at their Inauguration Day parades. Why shouldn't Trump get to have one?ย
