The voting age in America was lowered from 21 to 18 during the Vietnam War, and since the Parkland school massacre, many have argue we should lower it to 16. Protesting Florida teenagers say they're being targeted in school shootings, yet they have no say in gun legislation. Others point out that teenagers who work pay taxes, so they should be allowed to vote. But some say 16- and 17-year-olds lack the judgment and maturity to make voting decisions. Should we lower the voting age? 🗳️

At CNN, Joshua Douglas argues that teenager who survived the Parkland massacre and are now demonstrating against gun violence are "the real adults in the room" and that they should be allowed to vote.

Survivors of the tragedy have spoken out loudly against politicians' refusal to pass meaningful gun control reform. They have quite literally kept the issue at the forefront of a nationwide debate, refusing to allow legislators to offer "thoughts and prayers" and nothing more. By engaging in respectful and forceful advocacy, these youth are proving how important it is to include young people's voices in political debate.

Stephen Colbert clearly trusts America's teenagers to make good decisions in the voting booth more than he does those currently old enough to vote. If 16- and 17-year-olds can work, go to school, apply for loans, pay taxes, drive in most states and be tried as adults in court, why shouldn't they have a say in electing the officials who make our laws?

But many on the right scoff at the idea that teenage activists would be given the right to vote.

And former Hill staffer Austin Frank argues the age of voting should be higher than it is. Kids just don't understand the issues.

It’s a maturity thing. Most young voters simply aren’t emotionally stable and mature enough to be entrusted with a presidential election vote, and also lack skin in the game (income, assets, career, etc.)
