Should Kirsten Gillibrand run for president in 2020?

Many believe Kirsten Gillibrand is just who Democrats need to lead them to victory in 2020. The #MeToo Senator has been consistently anti-Trump and an outspoken voice for the Resistance. But in a recent 60 Minutes interview, Gillibrand was called out for flip-flopping after having been pro-gun and anti-immigration in the past. Plus, many Democrats are still angry she led the charges against Sen. Al Franken and believe she's too divisive to be the party's nominee in 2020. What do you think? 🤔

Kirsten Gillibrand, the junior senator from New York, is a rising star in the Democratic Party, and many believe she is exactly who Democrats need to win in 2020. Gillibrand has been the most consistent anti-Trump Senatorvoting against all of his nominees, and she isn't afraid to call out members of her own party.

Some may call what Gillibrand is doing political opportunism, but what I call it is admitting publicly what we all say privately. The Democratic Party cannot aim to merely be better than the Republican Party. The bar for that is only inches from the ground. Instead, Democrats have to be willing to be critical of our own behavior and own up to our past mistakes. That may not be a popular opinion or one that makes everyone feel warm inside, but at the end of the day, as a party, we’ll be better and stronger for it.

Long before the #MeToo movement caught fire, Gillibrand made sexual assault the focus of her career.

This is the perfect moment for Gillibrand to emerge as one of the leading voices in the Democratic Party, a perhaps fleeting window when gender seems to have trumped class or race as the animating principle in American political and cultural life. It is a moment she helped bring about, by seizing on the issue of sexual assault in the military, bringing victims up to Capitol Hill to share their stories publicly and challenging the Pentagon to hold itself accountable.

After calling out Bill Clinton and leading the charge against Sen. Al Franken, many are convinced Gillibrand will be the Democratic nominee in 2020. This is her moment.

But in a recent 60 Minutes interview, Gillibrand was called out for flip-flopping on immigration and gun control. As a congresswoman representing a rural and heavily Republican district in upstate New York, Gillibrand was a member of the "Blue Dog Coalition of conservative Democrats" who were hardliners on immigration, LGBT issues, and gun control. Gillibrand notably had a 100 percent rating from the NRA. As Osita Nwanevu explains it:

Her immigration platform was of a piece with the proto-Trumpism brewing during George W. Bush’s second term—no amnesty or benefits for illegal aliens; a crackdown on sanctuary cities like New York; more agents, fencing, and tech for the border; and legislation making English America’s official language. The Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ advocacy group, gave her the lowest rating of any New York Democrat in Congress for her positions on gay rights issues. Her rating from the National Rifle Association, meanwhile, was a solid 100 percent.

When asked about her switch on gun control, Gillibrand admitted: "I couldn't have been more wrong."

She offered up a similar answer on immigration: “I came from a district that was 98 percent white. … And I just didn’t take the time to understand why these issues mattered because it wasn’t right in front of me. And that was my fault. It was something that I’m embarrassed about and I’m ashamed of.”

Many support Gillibrand as a potential 2020 nominee.

Anti-Trump conservative Steve Schmidt believes Gillibrand will be a "force to be reckoned with" in 2020.

Others feel the attacks on her have been sexist and unfair.

But many Democrats will never forgive Gillibrand for leading the attack against Franken.

And others feel her flip-flip on gun control is pure opportunism.

But some believe Gillibrand should be praised for shifting left, not punished for it. Since she's become a Senator, she has been consistently progressive.
