Is Justin Trudeau a fake liberal?

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently apologized for a joke he made in which he told a woman she should say "peoplekind" instead of "mankind." But critics of Trudeau argue "dumb jokes" are the least of his worries. While Trudeau is seen by many as a liberal hero, his policies say otherwise, and it's high time progressives recognize him for the fake liberal he is. But Trudeau's defenders argue nobody is perfect, and in the era of Trump, Trudeau may be the free world's last hope. What do you think? 🇨🇦

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had to apologize after making a "dumb joke" in which he told a woman she should say "peoplekind" instead of "womankind." The handsome 46-year-old has long been a darling of the progressive left, but Molly Roberts of The Washington Post argues silly gaffes are the least of Trudeau's worries. While Trudeau has leaned into his identity as a "woke" politician—penning an essay about feminism and insisting on a gender-balanced cabinet—Trudeau's policies have been less than liberal.

This is more than a case of performative allyship falling flat. It’s a lesson in a broader trend of performative progressivism obscuring illiberal policymaking. The same day Trudeau held forth on our hopelessly gendered vocabulary, it surfaced that his government had brokered a $233 million deal to sell 16 combat helicopters to the Philippines. Philippine dictator Rodrigo Duterte will likely use these weapons to kill citizens he deems undesirable even more expeditiously than he has already managed...

Trudeau appears to be all talk when it comes to progressivism, and more and more people are starting to catch on. Trudeau's approval ratings have fallen significantly, and criticism of the charming Canadian continues to build. Trudeau promised legislation to close the pay gap in Canada but has yet to follow through. He backtracked on a promise to welcome refugees. He may not be as bad as Trump, but is that really the bar one has to clear these days in order to be championed?

Far too many here in the United States are content to cheer Trudeau on for his sometimes surface-level commitment to liberal causes while ignoring the ways he isn’t liberal at all... Americans who call themselves progressives should hold politicians accountable to the code they keep so close, even from thousands of miles away. At the least, they shouldn’t blindly celebrate leaders who miss the mark.

But many people forget how terrible the alternative would've been. Trudeau unseated conservative Stephen Harper, who was known for his far-right extremism. Trudeau may not be perfect, but what politician is? In the era of Trump, Stephen Rodrick of Rolling Stone argues Trudeau may be "the free world's best hope" as Russian influence continues to spread and Trump continues to dismantle democratic institutions.

[Trudeau's] land races toward inclusion, while our nation builds walls and lusts for an era of vanilla homogeneity that ain't coming back. At this moment, Justin Trudeau's Canada looks like a beautiful place to ride out an American storm.

Liberals often lose elections not because their ideas aren't popular, but because they're too fractured to unite behind a candidate. If liberals keep attacking their own, how can they ever expect to maintain power? Trudeau is in part responsible for the reunification of the Liberal Party of Canada. It's too soon to cancel him.

There had long been a buzz that Justin should enter politics... [But] liberals were in the process of plummeting from a Parliament-controlling 172 seats in 2000 to 34 in 2011, as old left-leaning war horses fought and squabbled over the party's carcass. "He knew the party had farther to fall before it could reinvent itself," says [Gerald] Butts... Trudeau won in an upset in 2008, made all the more significant because his Liberal Party took another national thrashing.

As President Obama often says, "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good." Liberals should leave Justin Trudeau alone.
