Fallon has since expressed regret for his part in normalizing Trump.
"I did not do it to 'normalize' him or to say I believe in his political beliefs or any of that stuff."
It was, it turned out, the biggest mistake of Fallon's career. He almost immediately began taking incoming fire on social media from people who felt that Trump was an existential threat to America whom Fallon had 'normalized' for people who were still on the fence about him. "It just got bigger and out of control," Fallon recalls.
But President Trump told Fallon he should "be a man" and stand by his interview from nearly two years ago.
.@jimmyfallon is now whimpering to all that he did the famous “hair show” with me (where he seriously messed up my hair), & that he would have now done it differently because it is said to have “humanized” me-he is taking heat. He called & said “monster ratings.” Be a man Jimmy!
Others feel it is ridiculous to blame one late-night host for the normalization of Donald Trump. The media, the Republican establishment, and the American electorate all had a part in normalizing Trump. Leave Jimmy Fallon alone.
If you think #JimmyFallon “normalized”, “humanized” Trump so much it helped get him elected:
1. Fallon also playfully interviewed Hillary — who was often labeled as robotic and cold — and she lost.
