Lock him up?

Jared Kushner is once again swept up in a scandal involving White House protocol. Chairman of the House Oversight Committee Elijah Cummings announced his committee learned Kushner was using the messaging app WhatsApp to conduct government business. Cummings said Kushner was talking to foreign leaders and heads of state on the app, which would be a violation of the Presidential Records Act. Kushner's lawyer disputes the story, saying Kushner follows all regulations. What do you think?

Mere months after news broke that Ivanka Trump had been using a personal email account to send government-related emails, her husband has been embroiled in a similar scandal. Per CNN

House Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings said Thursday his committee has obtained new information that several senior White House officials have used personal email and messaging accounts to conduct government business, asserting that President Donald Trump's son-in-law communicated with foreign leaders through a private messaging application that appears to lack adequate safeguards.
In a Thursday letter to the White House, the Maryland Democrat alleged that Jared Kushner, who is also a senior White House adviser, had been using WhatsApp, a popular messaging application, to "communicate with foreign leaders" -- something he said that Kushner's attorney had confirmed in a private meeting. He also contended that Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump, also a senior adviser, may be in violation of the Presidential Records Act by her use of private emails.

NPR reports Kushner's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, contradicted Cummings' assertions. While Cummings said the information came directly from Lowell, the lawyer now says that while Kushner does use WhatsApp to conduct business, he is not violating any laws or regulations.

Lowell contended in a letter to Cummings Thursday afternoon that some of the information the committee states is incorrect, including that Lowell confirmed Kushner used a messaging app to communicate "with foreign 'leaders' or 'officials.' " He said he told the committee that Kushner follows White House protocols and referred questions to the White House counsel.

Lowell also said Kushner made sure to follow all guidelines in his business interactions. Per PBS

When asked whether Kushner had ever used WhatsApp to discuss classified information, Cummings said Lowell responded, “That’s above my pay grade,” and referred questions to the White House and the National Security Council, according to Cummings’ letter.
Lowell said Kushner archives the messages he sends by taking screenshots of them and forwarding that record to his official White House email account or the National Security Council.
In his response letter Thursday, Lowell stressed that he didn’t say whether Kushner used WhatsApp to communicate with foreign leaders or officials. He said he also informed the committee that Kushner complies with all protocols involving classified information.

The irony of Jared Kushner using a private messaging system to conduct affairs of state was not lost on members of the Democratic Party. Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server to conduct the people's business led to the constant cries of "lock her up!" Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shared the story on Twitter, using a common meme to highlight the hypocrisy.

AOC was not the only person to perk up at the story. Hillary Clinton herself responded to Ocasio-Cortez's tweet.
