For most of Malcolm X's life, he did not identify with Dr. Martin Luther King or the mainstream civil rights movement, and frequently critiqued them both. As a Black nationalist and separatist, he saw the doctrine of nonviolence as a way to manipulate African-Americans into being defenseless: "I don’t think when a man is being criminally treated, that some criminal has the right to tell that man what tactics to use to get the criminal off his back."

The history of unpunished violence against our people clearly indicates that we must be prepared to defend ourselves, or we will continue to be a defenseless people at the mercy of a ruthless and violent, racist mob.

Martin Luther King, on the other hand, rejected what he called "the hatred and despair of the black nationalist." He saw civil disobedience as the swiftest and most effective way to achieve civil rights and dismantle the oppression of Black people in America.

"I am convinced that for practical as well as moral reasons, nonviolence offers the only road to freedom for my people."
