Is the media fair to President Trump? | The Tylt
President Trump has accused the press of covering him unfairly during the campaign, and says it's only gotten worse since his election: "I used to get great press. I get the worst press." His defenders say no other politician has received such unjust coverage. But others argue the press has actually stepped up their game and finally doing some real investigative journalism. If Trump is unhappy, that's good—it means reporters are asking tough questions and doing their jobs. What do you think? 📰
Is the media fair to President Trump?
During his commencement speech for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, President Donald Trump told the graduates how he felt about the media:
“No politician in history—and I say this with great surety—has been treated worse or more unfairly."
Trump's defenders point to the fact that media coverage during his first 100 days was more unfavorable than for any other U.S. president in history.
Trump's coverage was not merely negative in overall terms. It was unfavorable on every dimension. There was not a single major topic where Trump’s coverage was more positive than negative.
At the Washington Post, Callum Borchers calls Trump's kvetching about the media unrealistic and out of touch. He argues Trump is being scrutinized just as much as any leader of the free world should be. Of course the press doesn't cover the president the same way they cover a game show host or real estate magnate.
For three decades, Trump was covered through various soft-focused lenses: reality TV star, beauty pageant owner, football team owner, golf course developer, professional big talker....How could anyone be truly surprised that the president or a major-party nominee for president would have to go through the media wringer?
While 90 percent does sound high, the president's detractors say he deserves it. What has he done to warrant positive coverage?
When you give your kids White House jobs, fly to your private golf course every weekend, fire the FBI director who is investigating you, and then give away security secrets to Russian spies? Your media coverage is generally not going to be positive.
But Trump supporters say the media has been biased against him from the start, and Trump owes them nothing.
