In an election year like no other, an internet meme finds itself needing a political explainer. What we know is Pepe the Frog, a cartoon meme that dates back to 2008, is being used by Donald Trump supporters to do what memes do best: comment, troll, remix ideas. Y'know, meme stuff. But in the wake of so much usage, Hillary Clinton's campaign has called out Pepe as being a meme-tool for white supremacists. They say Pepe is becoming a kind of dog-whistle for alt-right racists. Has Pepe been co-opted or is this much ado about nothing? Vote below!

The conversation hit a fever pitch when Hillary Clinton's campaign posted an article titled "Donald Trump, Pepe the frog, and white supremacists: an explainer." Following up a Daily Beast article, the Clinton campaign says:

"But in recent months, Pepe’s been almost entirely co-opted by the white supremacists who call themselves the 'alt-right.' They’ve decided to take back Pepe by adding swastikas and other symbols of anti-semitism and white supremacy."

Gauntlet thrown.

Pepe has been consciously used by a group of people to promote deplorable ideas. That includes one meme depicting a Nazi soldier handing out a Jewish star saying, "You get a gold star." Another meme featured a semitic-looking Pepe smiling as a plane crashes into the World Trade Center. The connection of Pepe to Trump's politics on immigration and Muslims is also pretty direct.

Memes are interpretable. They are what you want them to be. Do you want Pepe to be a janitor? Poof, he's a janitor. Do you want Pepe to be Superman? Just make it so.

Maybe some bad people have taken to Pepe, that doesn't change the nature of Pepe himself. It doesn't make others using him de facto racists.

The creator of Pepe thinks the character will bounce back, just like Robert Downey Jr. came back after being arrested in 1996. Will be Pepe be the next 'Iron Man'?

#JustPepeTheFrog

This whole thing is ridiculous.

#PepeIsDeplorable

Or is this whole thing racist? We can't tell anymore.
