The inflammatory French magazine Charlie Hebdo caused an uproar after its latest issue featured a cartoon of Hurricane Harvey victims depicted as Nazis on the cover. Other political cartoons were also met with backlash for their insensitivity to the ongoing tragedy in Texas and Louisiana.

People have been asking when it is okay to politicize a tragedy. Some believe the answer is never.

Many argue it is important to honestly analyze catastrophes in order to learn from them, and accusations of politicizing tragedy are used to silence important debate. The Environmental Protection Agency accused climate scientists of being politically motivated for drawing connections between Hurricane Harvey and global warming. But climate scientists have defended their actions.

"Explaining cause and effect is a crucial role scientists play in helping us understand and prevent worst-case disasters like Harvey. Science becomes politicized when politicians and others engage in spreading misinformation for political ends, which is precisely what President Donald Trump and EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt have been doing all year."

Others have called out the hypocrisy of those who only politicize tragedies when it benefits their agenda.

Still, some argue there is an appropriate context to politicize a disaster, but talking about the possible impacts on an election is not one of them.

"Right now, Harvey is still an active tropical cyclone, dumping billions of gallons of water on the fourth largest city in America. The death toll is still rising and will not be fully known until floodwaters recede, which could take weeks. People are still trapped in submerged homes; shelters are overcrowding; vulnerable fence-line communities are breathing toxic fumes. Harvey is doing a lot of truly awful things at this very moment. And you want to talk about how it could impact an election in three and a half years?"
