A former superintendent of the Oregon State Penitentiary wrote a powerful piece in the New York Times entitled "What I Learned From Executing Two Men" about why he is now working to end the death penalty.

"The average citizen will never find himself looking a death row prisoner in the eye. I could not see that execution did anything to enhance public safety. I used to support the death penalty. I don’t anymore."

Now-deceased Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was a firm supporter of the death penalty, and argued for both its constitutionality and morality.
