When Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway was photographed kneeling on a couch in the Oval Office, critics found it disrespectful towards the leaders of historically Black colleges and universities who were there. But her defenders say she was just trying to get a picture of the group. Plus, some freakout about a lack of Oval Office decorum happens during every president's tenure (i.e., Obama's feet-on-desk scandal). Was Conway's move rude or does everyone just need to calm down? 🛋️

People who thought the critique of Kellyanne was ridiculous quickly filled social media with images of Obama with his feet up on the White House desk.

But many argued it wasn't about the couchit was her behavior in a room filled with black academics that was the problem.

At the Washington Post, Chris Cillizza thought the uproar was ridiculously overblown:

The simple fact is that this is a totally contrived “controversy” born of some people's blind hatred for Conway and, by extension, Trump and his White House. There is simply no “there” there.

But Slate’s chief political correspondent Jamelle Bouie disagreed. People of color saw this moment differently.

It is tough to picture Conway kneeling on the couch and snapping photos with her phone if Benjamin Netanyahu was in the room. And others pointed out there were plenty of professional photographers available at the meeting.

Others called the incident trivial and a distraction from the real issues.

Even Conway's detractors said this was a silly thing to fault her for.

But critics argue Conway would never have assumed such a casual posture in a room full of white leaders. The facial expressions of the HBCU presidents in the picture is telling.
