Is Donald Trump going to try to get out of debating Hillary Clinton? | The Tylt
Now that the conventions are over, the next big events on the political calendar are the presidential debates—but already, there are signs that Donald Trump may not show up.
Will Donald Trump actually debate Hillary Clinton?
At Talking Points Memo, Josh Marshall writes that Trump is already laying the groundwork to get out of debating Clinton ("How and Why Trump Will Try To Ditch The Debates"). Trump is accusing Clinton and the Democratic Party of "rigging" the debates by scheduling them on the same night as NFL games. But his accusation is an easily disproved falsehood—the debates were scheduled in September 2015 by an independent committee.
Some political observers say Trump needs to avoid the debates or risk extreme tactical disadvantage with Clinton. He's just not going to be able to hack it arguing with a former Secretary of State. Others point out that the debates during the Republican primaries served Trump well, and that if he does not show up to debate Clinton, he risks far worse criticism. They think he will be there no matter what.
