Is democracy on the decline?

The triumph of Brexit and Donald Trump has some people worried that democracy is on the decline. A study shows that fewer and fewer people think it is essential to live in a democracy. However, other polls suggest that Americans still have faith in democratic ideals, like free speech, that keep democracy alive. A swing in populism doesn't equate to an end of democracy. What do you think?  Vote now. 🗽

A study has found that support for democracy is on the decline. Fewer Americans think that democracy is essential to the United States and an increasing number would support military rule.

According to the Mounk-Foa early-warning system, signs of democratic deconsolidation in the United States and many other liberal democracies are now similar to those in Venezuela before its crisis.
Across numerous countries, including Australia, Britain, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden and the United States, the percentage of people who say it is “essential” to live in a democracy has plummeted, and it is especially low among younger generations.

Liberal democracy is decomposing into its constitutive parts: Over the next decades, much of the world will face a tragic choice between illiberal democracy, or democracy without rights, and undemocratic liberalism, or rights without democracy.
But if that comes to pass, it is unlikely to be the end point. For when illiberal democrats fall out of favor, they tend not to give up power. What starts as a genuine attempt to channel the voice of the people all too often degenerates into a straightforward dictatorship. A strikingly similar development might well befall undemocratic liberalism: Forced to defend itself against an onslaught of illiberal populists, it may have to resort to increasingly illiberal means to subdue its opponents. In the long run, both illiberal democracy and undemocratic liberalism may thus be headed for a remarkably similar fate: a gradual descent into an unvarnished form of dictatorship.

Socrates uses the analogy of a ship at sea to criticize democracy. If you're going to sea, who would you want to captain the boat—your average Joe or someone trained in navigating the open ocean? Probably the person who's trained.

Similarly, Socrates argues that just like how you would want a trained and educated captain, you would want a trained and educated voter. The ability to figure out and understand which politician and policies are best for a nation does not come naturally. Socrates argues that those responsibilities must be entrusted to people who have been educated and trained with the proper skill set to determine who is best.

“History,” Obama said in closing, “does not move in a straight line. Civil rights in America did not move in a straight line. Democracy in Greece did not move in a straight line. … And progress is never a guarantee. Progress has to be earned by every generation. But I believe history gives us hope.” A president who promised hope and change has presided over momentous change, much of it not what he envisioned eight years ago in Berlin. Yet his hope remains.

Despite the pessimistic study, there are strong indicators that democracy is still widely supported in the United States.

Given the recent turn of events, a lot people have lost faith in democracy.

But not everyone has given up on it. People are still fighting to support democratic institutions.
