Rampant income inequality; a rapidly shrinking middle class; wealth being hoarded by the 1 percent; skyrocketing healthcare, education, and housing costs—no wonder so many Americans are wondering if capitalism is turning out to be a raw deal.

Socialism is often called theft by its biggest critics, and America is an individualistic nation to its core. Could a model built on the needs of the many really work in a country like ours? Capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other economic model!

Many argue that Americans stigmatize socialism without even really knowing what it is—but the more they learn about it, the more they like it🌹

Remember when single-payer healthcare failed in Sanders' home state of Vermont because it cost too much? Critics argue that if we want socialism, we have to pay for it. Americans still pay far lower taxes than citizens of most other industrialized nations. Yet, taxes are still the third rail of American politics, and even trying to raise them on the wealthiest citizens can be political suicide.

Americans see the way people live in places like Canada, France, and Denmark, where no one is bankrupted by healthcare bills, homelessness isn't rampant, and people can get an education regardless of their economic status. Why can't we have nice things too?

Socialism remains a toxic ideology for tens of millions of Americans, and some find Sanders' beliefs very dangerous. This article is from March of 2017.

Many Americans have forgotten the lessons of the Cold War and the disasters witnessed in the crumbling economies and failed polities of Communist and socialist countries in the 1990s. Communism was on its last leg, it appeared, and its little brother socialism was not far behind....That America itself may become a socialist country must be abhorrent and foreign to the many who have fought, and to those who still fight, for free markets, traditional values, and capitalist ideals.

Though Bernie Sanders is seen as the new face of socialism, many Americans still associate it with Lenin, Stalin, Marx, and Mao. That's one heck of a rouges gallery.

Critics of socialism point to the fact that the car, the lightbulb, the Internet, the computer, and the iPhone were not invented in Sweden, nor any other socialist country. We need capitalism to encourage innovation.

Capitalism is culture. To sustain it, laws and institutions are important, but the more fundamental role is played by the basic human spirit of independence and initiative.

Americans don't trust the government the way that Nordic nations do. If anything, government is generally demonized in American political culture. People scoff at the idea that the government would be able to provide healthcare, childcare, or education when it's seen as so incompetent.

But others point out the U.S. government already provides healthcare to tens of millions of Americans, through programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and the Veterans Health Administration. We are not a strictly capitalist economy, nor have we ever been.

Plain and simple? The United States is already Socialist, and we enjoy the aspects of it each and every day.
