Should Democrats make impeachment the focus of the 2018 midterms?

A number of Democratic hopefuls have promised to impeach President Trump if they are elected in 2018, and some believe the Democrats should make impeachment the focus of the 2018 midterms. But others warn against such a strategy, arguing it could actually backfire by motivating Trump's voters even more. If Democrats want to win in 2018, they should focus on the issues, not the president. What do you think?

As we get closer to the 2018 midterm elections, many are urging Democrats to campaign on impeaching President Trump. But the Democratic leadership doesn't seem too keen on this idea.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the constitutional requirement for impeaching President Trump hasn't been met. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's office says she's not on board with the idea. And former Senate majority leader Harry M. Reid is telling his fellow Democrats to “stop it.” Good luck with that.

Some argue Democrat's best bet in 2018 will be to run on the issues, not just run on an anti-Trump platform.

But a Quinnipiac poll found more than 70 percent of Democratic voters want to begin impeachment proceedings. Why wouldn't Democratic leaders listen to their voters?

A number of 2018 Democratic hopefuls, like Ted Cruz's challenger Beto O'Rourke, have promised to vote for impeachment if elected.

But President Trump has begun using impeachment to energize his voters. Focusing on Trump too much could backfire on Democrats by mobilizing even more Republicans.

Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders has long urged Democrats to focus on pushing a progressive agenda rather than focus on Trump. It's not enough to be against the president, Democrats must stand for something.
