Has President Trump made protests worse?

The United States is experiencing a spasm of violence as the nation grieves the death George Floyd—who was killed by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin while three fellow officers stood by and watched. These protests are becoming about something more than just the killing of George Floyd. People who feel they have nothing to lose and are sick and tired of being pushed around by both police and an unfair system are lashing out against both. President Trump has stoked tensions over the past four years and even now encourages violence against protesters and journalists. Trump has used his platform to sow the seeds of discord—now we are facing its harvest. However, Trump's supporters believe that this is the work of Democrats and leftists who are dead-set on sabotaging the president, despite all evidence showing that the president's own incompetency has been his most effective obstacle.

This picture says it all. It was impossible to imagine anything like this becoming our reality four years ago. Even last week—when we were staring down the barrel of a botched response to a pandemic—feels like a better time compared to this. It's a simple question. With everything going on, do you feel like you are better off now than you were four years ago?

Nevertheless, President Trump has taken this time as an opportunity to encourage violence and attack fellow Americans. However, this is the behavior some of his supporters expect from him, believing that he is promoting "law and order."

In a tweet that violated Twitter's rules against glorifying violence, this is how Trump has conducted himself in the middle of our current crisis:
