Should the Senate block the appointment of Gina Haspel?

Gina Haspel, President Trump's nominee for CIA director, has come under fire for her involvement in torture under the Bush administration. Haspel faced tough questions from the Senate Intelligence Committee on her nomination, and many are urging Democrats in Congress to block her appointment entirely. But conservatives argue Haspel is being unfairly singled out. She is more than qualified to head the CIA and played a huge role in bringing Osama bin Laden to justice. What do you think?

Gina Haspel is under intense scrutiny for her involvement in torture under the Bush administration.

The New York Times, ProPublica, the New Yorker, and others have all independently reported that Haspel oversaw a secret black site prison in Thailand, code-named “Cat’s Eye.”

Haspel was also involved in the destruction of tapes documenting the torture and abuse of detainees by U.S. soldiers.

In 2004, journalists uncovered gruesome photos documenting the torture and abuse of detainees at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison by US soldiers.
In November 2005, [former CIA acting general counsel] John Rizzo got a cable out of the blue saying: “Pursuant to headquarters’ directions, the videotapes have been destroyed.” It turns out that a few days before, a cable had gone out from CIA headquarters directing black site managers to destroy the tapes.
The person who issued that cable was Gina Haspel.

Many feel this makes her unfit to head the CIA.

“The torture of detainees in U.S. custody during the last decade was one of the darkest chapters in American history,” Sen. McCain wrote on Twitter on March 13. “The Senate must do its job in scrutinizing the record & involvement of Gina Haspel in this disgraceful program.”

President Trump is extremely confident in his nominee.

But not everyone is so convinced. Over 100 former U.S. ambassadors sent a letter to the Senate demanding they block Haspel.

Many feel Haspel must answer for her past involvement in torture if she is even to be considered.

Some senators have already promised to block her.

Other senators argue it would be absurd to block her nomination.

Democrats complain that President Trump has repeatedly attacked our intelligence community. But derailing Haspel’s nomination would be a greater attack on our intelligence professionals than anything Trump has done. Haspel is beloved by the CIA’s rank and file because she is one of them. Were the Senate to reject her, the nominee’s former colleague said, “it would send a really chilling, devastating message.”

But Haspel has maintained she would not bring back the controversial detention and interrogation program if she were to become CIA director.

Others feel Haspel is being unfairly singled out.
